Conquerors Hold On For First Victory Print E-mail
Monday, 04 February 2008
The AFLBS Men grabbed their first win of the year on Saturday by defeating Oak Hills Christian College 94-88. The Conquerors sprinted out of the gate scoring 50 points in the first half and holding Oak Hills to 28 points, using a defense designed to shut down their two big scorers. However, Oak Hills clawed back in the 2nd half, rallying behind their captain Glen Bratz and his 34 second half points. In the end, AFLBS held off the comeback with some stifling defense and pressure-packed free throws. The Conquerors were led by TJ Hinrichs and Luke Halvorson, who both had career games. TJ dropped in 39 points and 12 rebounds, and Luke notched a triple-double with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. The win avenged a loss to Oak Hills the night before, when the Conquerors fell on the short end of a 93-76 score. In that game, AFLBS was led again by Hinrichs and Halvorson, who racked up 23 and 28 points, respectively.

The AFLBS Women completed a sweep of Oak Hills over the weekend by winning 82-32 on Friday and 76-33 on Saturday. The women came out on Friday with their most balanced scoring attack of the year. Five players finished in double figures with Elizabeth Berge leading all scorers with 18 points on 5 of 6 shooting from behind the arc. On Saturday, Melissa Berge led the Conquerors with 26 points, and Rachel Papillon added 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Conquerors are now 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

This week, the AFLBS basketball teams head to Canada to take on conference rival Providence College in a Friday-Saturday doubleheader.

AFLBS Women Pick Up Two Key Victories Print E-mail

The AFLBS Women's Basketball team added two more victories in the win column last week by defeating Crossroads College 51-48 and conference-leading St. Cloud Tech 58-51. Those wins moved the Lady Conqueror's overall record to 6-3 and 4-2 in the conference. On Thursday night, AFLBS took an 11 point lead into the half, but the pesky Knights from Crossroads came out with an 11-0 run to start the 2nd half and tie the game. The Knights were able to stick around with consistent shooting from their guards, but in the end it was solid defense down the stretch from the Lady Conquerors that sealed the game for the home team. Chris Gullikson led AFLBS with 19 points and 14 rebounds, and Melissa Berge and Ashley Adolphsen added 12 and 9 points, respectively. On Saturday, St. Cloud Tech rolled in with a perfect conference record. The first half can be best described as a defensive struggle, and St. Cloud went into the locker room with a 21-19 lead. In the 2nd half, Gullikson took over with some hot shooting, scoring 24 points in the second half. Again, solid defense and clutch free throw shooting helped to end the game in the Conquerors' favor. Gullikson finished with 38 points and Berge added 14.

The AFLBS Men also took on Crossroads College and St. Cloud Tech last week. Against Crossroads on Thursday night, the men were bitten by the "bad shooting" bug, shooting 25% from the field. An aggressive Crossroads defense helped give their team a 30-point win, 71-41. Luke Halvorson led the Conquerors with 18 points, and Ross Tenneson grabbed 11 rebounds. On Saturday, the AFLBS Men picked up their offense, but ran into a fundamentally sound St. Cloud team that only committed eight turnovers on the night. In the end, St. Cloud finished the evening with an 81-53 victory. Halvorson and TJ Hinrichs each dropped in 17 points, and JC Samuelson added 7 points and 10 rebounds.

This week, the AFLBS teams hit the road for a rematch against non-conference foe Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA, on Tuesday night. This weekend, the teams will travel north to Bemidji, MN, where they will meet Oak Hills Christian College for a Friday-Saturday doubleheader.

Lady Conquerors Topple Emmaus Print E-mail
Monday, 14 January 2008
In their first game back from the extended Christmas break, the AFLBS Women showed no signs of rust by defeating the Eagles from Emmaus 54-45. The Conquerors jumped out to a fast start, but the Eagles responded and only trailed by two at the half. In the second half, the Conquerors rode some hot shooting from their guards to finish with a nine-point victory. In the game, the Conquerors combined to shoot 10-22 from behind the arc. Chris Gullikson led the team with 25 points and 8 rebounds, and Melissa Berge added 13 points and 9 rebounds. This weekend, the AFLBS Women travel to Pillsbury Baptist Bible College on Friday to try and avenge a two-point loss earlier in the season. They will return home on Saturday in a non-conference matchup against Faith Baptist from Ankeny, IA.
