“and [if] My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)
This is one of Scripture’s most wonderful prayer promises, and one that our country all the more must be called to heed. Tragically, we have become a nation that is testing the patience of God in our affirming and approval of sin, our willful turning from God, and a prideful sense of independence from God. This message of resistance and rejection of the Lord’s things is evidenced in our courts, our political system, and in nearly every aspect of our culture today. It is now just as the prophet described centuries ago: “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20). And yet, in the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14, we hold the key; a key that unlocks a door to repentance in our own hearts and forgiveness and healing from God’s heart. It is good especially in this season of electing men and women who will lead and govern us that we reflect rightly upon our own sin, the sin of our nation, and the grief this brings to the heart of God. Let us come humbly to the throne of grace, let us be informed and vote wisely, and especially, let us pray much!
